Express Entry 101: Check Eligibility

Hi,

First things first: Are you eligible for Canada Immigration through Express Entry? EE is based on a points format, your profile gets points based on various criteria such as Employment history, language proficiency, Age, Marital Status, etc. The higher you score, the more chances of getting an Invitation to Apply (ITA). Once you get the ITA, you will need to provide documents validating every piece of information, so be true to yourself 🙂

Also, it is likely that you would not have appeared for a language test at this point, so you would have to fill out the below again once you have your test results back to get a more accurate score.

Below is a detailed list of steps you will need to go through to check your eligibility:

Step 1: Open CIC CRS Calculator– We recommend the official website as most other calculators are on websites for lawyers and may/ may not be accurate. Use them at your own discretion.

Step 2: Fill in the questionnaire.

  • Q1: What is your marital status?
    • Annulled Marriage- If you had a marriage that was annulled (not divorced)
    • Common-Law– If your partner is 18 or older and has been living together for 12 months. If selected, an additional question appears to ask if your partner is a citizen is a permanent resident/ citizen.
    • Divorced/ Separate- If you were married but are now divorced/ separated
    • Legally Separated- If you are separated and have a court order for the separation
    • Married- Straightforward married. If selected, an additional question appears to ask if your partner is a citizen is a permanent resident/ citizen.
    • Never Married/ Single- Straighforward
    • Widowed- If your partner has passed away
  • Q3: How old are you?
    • Exact age as of the day of application
  • Q4: What is your level of education?
    • None, or less than secondary
    • Secondary diploma (Class 10/ 10th Grade equivalent)
    • One year program at University/ College/ Other Institute
    • Two year program at University/ College/ Other Institute
    • Bachelors’ degree- 3 years or more
    • Two or more certificates- one must be for at least 3 years
    • Masters’ degree or professional degree needed to practice a licensed profession (only for medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, podiatry, optometry, law, chiropractic medicine or pharmacy)
    • Doctoral level degree (PhD)
  • Q4b: Have you earned a Canadian degree, diploma or certificate?
    • Ensure that you qualify based on the criteria mentioned in the question before picking ‘Yes’
  • Q5: English Language Test
    • (i) Are your test results less than 2 years old?
      • If not, they are not allowed. You will have to reappear for the test
      • For test-running your eligibility, pick ‘Yes’
    • (ii) Which language test did you take for your first official language?
      • 3 options- CELPIP (English), IELTS (English) and TEF (French)
      • For most people, we recommend IELTS as it is the easiest available
    • Test Scores: The higher your test scores, the more points you get
      • Speaking: If you are fluent in spoken English, enter a high number, else lower
      • Listening: If you can understand British English, enter a high number, else lower
      • Reading: If you can read English novels fluently, enter a high number, else lower
      • Writing: If you have written essays before and are comfortable with them, enter a high number or lower
    • Do you have other language results?
      • For most people, this is a no. If you plan to appear for both French and English tests, pick the second test here and enter potential grades to test run the application
  • Q6: Work Experience
    • (i) In the last ten years, how many years of skilled work experience in Canada do you have?
      • This is only for specific full time jobs in Canada under NOCs starting with 0, A or B. If you have Canadian experience, check here for your NOC.
      • Enter the exact number of years of relevant job experience, else select “None, or less than a year”
    • In the last 10 years, how many total years of skilled work experience do you have?
      • This is also for specific full-time jobs outside of Canada. If you have work experience, check here for your NOC.
      • Enter the exact number of years of relevant job experience, else select “None, or less than a year”
  • Q7: Do you have a certificate of qualification from a Canadian province, territory or federal body?
    • A certificate of qualification lets people work in some skilled trades in Canada. Only the provinces, territories and a federal body can issue these certificates. To get one, a person must have them assess their training, trade experience and skills to and then pass a certification exam. People usually have to go to the province or territory to be assessed. They may also need experience and training from an employer in Canada. This isn’t the same as a nomination from a province or territory.
    • Select ‘Yes’, if you have a certificate of qualification. Else, pick ‘No’
  • Q8: Do you have a valid job offer?
    • For a job offer to be recognized here, they have to qualify these criteria
    • For most people outside Canada, this is difficult to get as Canadian businesses prefer hiring within the country
  • Q9: Do you have a nomination certificate from a province or territory?
    • This is for candidates who have received a nomination from a specific province or territory
    • To get a nomination, you have to apply through the Provincial Nominee Program for the specific province. These depend on the province’s requirements at the time. If you don’t have a nomination at this time, pick ‘No’ and continue the questionnaire
  • Q10: Do you or your spouse or common law partner (if they will come with you to Canada) have at least one brother or sister living in Canada who is a citizen or permanent resident?
    • To answer yes, the brother or sister must be:
      • 18 years old or older
      • related to you or your partner by blood, marriage, common-law partnership or adoption
      • have a parent in common with you or your partner
    • A brother or sister is related to you by:
      • blood (biological)
      • adoption
      • marriage (step-brother or step-sister)

Step 3: Once you are done with the above questions, hit the button for ‘Calculate Your Score’. Here, the website will give you a detailed report with points for 3 different Factors: Core/ Human Capital, Spouse and Skill Transferability. The 4th section will give your total score as a Grand Total.

Step 4: This is your final score. You can see the results of the last draw here. In general, scores above 450 are very good, while scores below 350 are low.

Once you have your score, head over to here to share and see where you stand!

Thanks for reading, hope this helped!
